We’re heading down under! Next week, my family and I are off to Australia to visit my husband’s side of the family for Christmas. Our last trip to Australia was 2 years ago when my son was four — which honestly feels like a lifetime ago — and this year we’ll be traveling with both our (now) six-year-old and our one-year-old. So yes… pray for us. 😂
Traveling with kids is equal parts exciting and chaotic, but I’ve learned a few tricks (and packed a few genius products) that make long-haul travel so much easier. Whether you’re flying internationally or just taking a short trip with your little one, these are the must-haves that make travel days smoother for everyone.

1. A Reliable Stroller
We ditched the lightweight stroller for our trip because we needed the storage for traveling around the airport. We were able to still gate-check our stroller, and this one that we have can be folded very easily. We’re bringing NUNA TAVO Stroller, which has a great storage basket under the seat and is very comfortable for the baby .
2. Snacks
Because snacks = peace. I like to pack a small bento-style container with a mix of dry snacks, pouches, and a couple of treats. My kids have food allergies so traveling with our own snacks are a MUST!

3. A Few Magical Distractions
I always pack a few new surprises for the plane: things like busy boards, magna tiles, and sticker books that keep little hands busy.
4. Sleep Helpers (Because Jet Lag Is Real)
A travel sleep sack, white noise machine, and blackout shades for wherever we stay are non-negotiable. I’ve learned that sticking to our bedtime routine (as much as possible) helps everyone adjust faster.
Our faves: sleep sack, travel sound machine, travel blackout curtains
5. On-the-Go Clean-Up Essentials
Babies and toddlers have a special talent for creating messes mid-flight. My carry-on always includes:
- Antibacterial wipes
- Wet/dry bag for dirty clothes
- Disposable activity placemats (lifesaver at restaurants!)
- Extra outfit (for you and baby) — because something will spill. Always.
6. Comfort Items
For long flights, I pack one “comfort item” per kid — my son brings his pillow from home – it has to be the brown pillow cover – and my daughter has her soft lovey and pacifier clip. These familiar things help calm them when they’re tired or overstimulated.
7. Kids’ Headphones & Tablet
For our 6-year-old, screen time is a survival tool on flights this long. I download a few movies, games, and shows ahead of time. We love kid-safe headphones and tablet case for durability (and cuteness).
Bonus: For the Parents
Don’t forget yourself! A good neck pillow, hydrating face mist, and eyemasks make all the difference. Plus, I always stash an extra outfit in my carry-on because you just never know when juice will fly.
Final Thoughts
Traveling with little ones isn’t exactly relaxing, but it’s always worth it. The memories, the family hugs at the airport, the beach days… all of it. And honestly, the more prepared I am, the more I can actually enjoy it.
If you’re traveling soon (especially with a toddler!), I hope this list helps make your trip smoother — or at least gives you a few extra minutes of peace on the plane. 😉
